There have been a few reports of a bear up at the ski hill. Single bear, no sow and cub reports. Here are a few tips for safely and respectfully recreating in bear country. - Carry bear spray in a quickly accessible place and be sure it hasn’t expired. - Make lots of noise. Sing, hoot and holler, talk a little louder than usual, especially when coming into open areas from the forest or around water where sounds and smells are muffled. - Recreate in a group of three or more. You’ll make more noise and groups are more intimidating than individuals. Safety in numbers. - Never wear headphones. Not even one side. If you really want music put your phone in your pocket. That’s more noise! - The bears were there first. If you see one from a distance never approach. If you have a dog get it on a leash and either head back the way you came or move through the area quickly and calmly keeping a close watch on the bear. If you encounter a bear a little closer do not make any sudden or abrupt movements. Back away slowly and come back another day. If you encounter a bear at close range remain standing upright, back up slowly and speak to the bear in a calm voice. Do not turn your back and avoid direct eye contact. - A bear may be scared off by a dog that chases it. The bear could also be annoyed, threatened or aggravated by the dog and follow it back to you or attack the dog. A bell on your dog provides extra noise. Do not encourage your dog to chase bears (or any wildlife). - Let others know what you saw, when you saw it and where by posting on our Facebook page! Stay safe and enjoy the trails.
